Its almost like a cheat sheet before pressing the New Years reset in January. In addition to the holiday thoughts, I tend to ask myself a series of questions including Am I on track in my career or my personal business plan? Have I had any abject failures or spectacular successes? Can I sneak in a few mora of the latter before the year is officially done?Be more flexibleWhile were on the subject of calendars, unlike New Years Eve which is on the same date every single year, the Jewish New Year is based on the lunar calendar and falls on a different date on the Gregorian calendar each year. So, some years we celebrate in September, others its in October. The thing is, that when you spend your life trying to figure out when to schedule meetings based on both the lunar calendar and your Google calendar, you learn to be a lot more flexible. The reason for this slightly extended break between the two is that sometimes no matter your best intentions, you just dont get it right. Maybe your concentration is off, or you just couldnt tap into the feeling youd hoped for. In the Jewish faith, you have 10 days to change that and to unseal your fate and try to make things better. Maybe youve screwed up at work. Maybe you keep screwing up at work but perhaps if you give yourself a set time limit (10 days anyone?) to try to improve, youll take the pressure off yourself to try to be perfect on the first go-round.

He found that all of the inspiring leaders think, act, and communicate the same way. Apparently, its the complete opposite to everyone else.Its Called the Golden Circle.The Golden Circle is comprised of three rings. The what is on the outer ring, the how is in the middle ring, and the why is in the center rin g. The inspired leaders, regardless of size or industry, all think and act from the inside out.According to Sineks theory, every single organization knows what they do, some know how they do it, but very few know why they do what they do. (Its not to make a profit, Sinek points out. Profit is a result, not a reason why things should be done.) It boils down to what a companys cause and beliefs are, why it exists, and most importantly, why should anyone care.Using Apple as an example, he shows how Apple markets itself differently from its competitors. It pitches its products from the inside out, starting from the why. As Sinek states, People dont buy what you do. They buy why you do it. The ultimate goal is to do business with people who believe what you believe. Sinek concludes that this is all grounded in biology. Our brains are wired to understand why people do things, to communicate from the inside of the Golden Circle to the outside.Applying the Golden Circle to Help Your CareerN ow, youre not Apple. Youre not Donald Trump or Bill Gates. What if youre simply a job seeker looking for a part-time telecommuting job? You can still apply the principles from Sineks TED talk to your own life. Image ORNLThe Department of Energys Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) developed the system as part of its evolving large-scale additive manufacturing initiative. It recently licensed the designs through an exclusive arrangement to Strangpresse, a Youngstown, Ohio-based manufacturer that sells its extruders and nozzles to 3D-printer manufacturers.This is an enabling technology that allows manufacturers to print high resolutions at high rates, says Bill Peter, director of DOEs Manufacturin g Demonstration Facility at ORNL.The extruders are built for robotic and gantry 3D printers used in manufacturing parts with up to a 20-foot axis. They can be retrofit to most large AM printers.These designs help to advance additive manufacturing from a prototyping industry to an actual production industry, says Chuck George, CEO of Strangpresse, a division of Hapco, a global manufacturing and design company. Its about getting these types of designs and technologies out of the lab and into the factory. These are the types of advancements that allow us to do that.Many industrial 3D printers can quickly pump out hundreds of pounds of printed material to produce fairly uniform products that require few variations or details, like surgical tubing or weather stripping. But its more time consuming and costly for those machines to print high-resolution components for such applications as machine tooling and dies used in the aerospace, automotive and other industries.To achieve the differen t layer thicknesses and heights required for printing fine geometric resolution, operators of large 3D printers have to slow or stop the machines to manually change nozzles and switch feedstocks. That diminishes the quality and increases the roughness of the printed components, which have to be fine-tuned in postproduction, adding costs to the project.ORNLs new extruder technology changes that by enabling the printers to automatically alternate among multiple nozzles of various diameters on the fly. Having the ability to do that while moving allows for a much more efficient processing of material, George says.The nozzles - attached to a turntable that resembles the revolving base of a microscope that holds different lenses - quickly and accurately deposit a variety of material thicknesses and heights to achieve the desired resolution. The breakthroughs are in how we can now process polymers with a wide range of variables, George says. Thats been accomplished by various things like e xtruder control.ORNL also redesigned the bell-shaped cavity of the nozzle to improve the flow of material and added a new poppet-like valve that quickly shuts off the flow of material to each nozzle. The team also developed new slicing software to control the resolution of the material while its being printed on the fly.It gives us the ability to do so much more, Peter says about the redesigned system.The new extruder increases high-resolution deposition rates of polymers by three orders of magnitude compared with earlier wire feedstock printers, going from about four cubic inches (the size of a chicken egg) per hour to 2,400 cubic inches (about two-thirds the size of a beer keg) per hour.The improvements translate to up to 100 pounds of high resolution material per hour, depending on the diameter of the extruders nozzle screw and the size and density of the polymer pellets.For another comparison, take one of ORNLs last high-profile projects. In 2015 the lab partnered with Cincinnat i Inc. to use their collaboratively developed Big Area Additive Manufacturing (BAAM) machine to print parts for a Shelby Cobra. That machine produced about 10 pounds of high-resolution material per hour. Peter expects ORNLs extruders to print 1,000 pounds of high-resolution material per hour within a year.ORNL also recently printed a proof-of-concept 30-foot submersible hull for one of the Navys prototype vessels. Using traditional manufacturing, the hull would have cost $600,000 to $800,000 and taken three to five months to build. The new additive manufacturing capabilities reduced costs by 90 percent and build time to just a few days.Weve come up significantly in our rates since the Shelby and the original BAAM system, Peter says. This new extruder is about using the output more effectively. This represents a steady progression in extruder technology.Thats something Strangpresses George likes to hear.He sees the ability to quickly, cheaply and efficiently print dies and molds as t he low hanging fruit of large additive manufacturing. But as the industry continues to advance its work with high-strength, lightweight polymers and higher-resolution designs, it will expand beyond those parts, incorporating such new elements as cooling and wiring channels into 3D-printed parts. Easily printing inexpensive prototypes or molds for a limited amount of products can also lower a companys costs, drive profits and improve its competitive edge, George says.We can now print highly customizable and unique things that werent possible, he says. The bottom line is printing usable parts and structures instead of just a mold, a die, or a jig. Most of us realize the importance of maintaining good workplace relationships and dont say things with the intention of offending our coworkers. Usually we simply dont realize the effect our words will have until its too late.Sometimes we speak without taking the time to think carefully about what we are about to say because we are busy thinking about or doing other things. Often, though, we do think about what we are going to say but dont think th at it will be offensive. It happens to everyone and it has probably happened to you. Maybe you said something in jest that a coworker didnt think was funny, brought up a topic that was inappropriate for the workplace or criticized his work too harshly. Only when you see the ausprgung on his face, do you realize youve insulted him. As much as you want to take back your words, you cant. What can you do? You have a couple of options. You can ignore what happened and hope your colleague will forgive and forget. That might work, but more likely you will continue to wonder if things are truly back to normal with your relationship. The other option- and the best way to move forward- is to deal with it immediately or as soon as you know theres a problem. Here are things you can do that will, hopefully, repair the problem or at least keep it from getting worse. Say Youre Sorry Apologize the moment you realize what happened. Even if all you can manage to do is utter Im sorry that is much bett er than letting the words that offended your coworker hang in the air. The longer you wait, the worse things could get. Your coworker might think you dont care that she was offended. The most important thing is that you let her know you do, regardless of whether you agree that she should have been.Dont Be Defensive You may not understand why your coworker has taken umbrage at what you said. For example, you may have told him a joke that was well received by other people, yet your office mates face turned red when he heard it. Should the fact that other people didnt react the saatkorn way somehow negate his reaction? No, it shouldnt. What matters is only that he was offended and that is what you must apologize for. All you need to say is Im sorry for telling a joke that offended you. Let It Go After you offer your apology, move on. There is no need to dwell on what happened. Doing that will only continue to remind your coworker of your offense, and there is no reason you would want t o do that. Everyone makes mistakes so stop beating yourself up over it.Give Your Offended Coworker Time Your colleague may not be able to forgive you immediately and you must respect that. She will accept your apology whenever shes ready and theres nothing you can do about it. Right now, anyone capable of covering the initial outlay can slap a solar array on their roof, power their home, and stand to make a little scratch to boot.But that scratch is dependent on net metering laws that allow individuals to sell their excess electricity to the utility company. These laws were put in place when the percentage of environmentally minded customers likely to have solar was negligible. Now its not just a few people, a couple of greensnow everybody that cares about money is saying maybe Ill put some panels up on my roof. That really scares some utilities, says Joshua Pearce, a professor of Materials Science and Engineering as well as Electrical and Computer Engineering at Michigan Tech.It scares them so much, that many utilities are trying to change net metering legislation, a move that would seriously squash the at tractiveness of adding solar to a home.What they dont realize, argues Pearce in his recent paper, Emerging Economic Viability of Grid Defection in a Northern Climate Using Solar Hybrid Systems, is that the price drop for solar, batteries, and natural gas has been so steep that their costumers now have the option of going off the grid entirely.Prof. Joshua Pearce holding low-cost laminated photovoltaic panels. Rather than cherrypicking a perfect place in Arizona or California, we said lets take the worst case in America Michigan, explains Pearce. Right now Im looking out my window. Its June, its cold and cloudy and terrible. And we get snow eight months of the year. Its a very, very challenging location to be considering moving off the grid. If we can make it work here, then basically everywhere else, at least in the continental U.S., is fair game.They did make it work ther e. The researchers, who included a photovoltaic expert (Pearce), a battery expert, a demographer, and computer scientists, showed that by using a combination of a photovoltaic ordnungsprinzip with a battery system and a cogeneration system, households making more than $30,000 could conceivably profit by unhitching from the grid.For northern climes as miserable as those in the Upper Peninsula, the cogeneration unit is key. These refrigerator-sized appliances sit next to a furnace and turn natural gas to electricity. Instead sending excess heat up a smokestack, its used to heat the home. As a result, household-sized cogeneration units can reach efficiencies of 85 percent, far superior to even the fruchtwein efficient centralized power plant.The economic viability of the hybrid off-the-gird system they used means that utilities trying to punish solar adopters through legislation will be shooting themselves in the foot. If youre a utility company with a set customer base and then all of a sudden 10 percent of your customers leave to go off the grid and make their own little micro-grids in their own houses and businesses, then your cost for distribution may stay exactly the same, but now you dont get any revenue from the energy that they would have bought, explains Pearce. So those costs go up, which means even more of your customers are going to want to jump ship, and it just continues and continues. They have all kinds of funny names for it. The death spiral is the most common one.But a morbid vortex is not a fait accompli. Some forward-thinking utilities are embracing the inevitable, providing loans to customers wanting to adopt solar, renting roofs from others. In essence, theyve changed their model to one of distributed generation. Such companies are still in the minority though. The majority are still ignoring things, says Pearce. Of course, even if a family could go off the grid, theyd mostly likely want to stay connected anyway, just in case theres a month of snowstorms and the gas lines go down. So utilities willing to distribute energy regardless of its source are far more likely to have a role in the micro-grid-powered future.Our strong recommendation is that you avoid the death spiral, says Pearce. However, its important to realize that the hiring process can take some time and you may not hear back right away. Unfortunately, its also possible that you may never get a response, not even a boilerplate note to let you know that you arent hired (or wont be called in for an interview). Often, companies receive hundreds (or even thousands) of applications, and simply do not have the time to follow-up. Others may not have a system in place for handling rejections. Here is some advice on when and how to follow up on the status of a job application. Before You Follow Up There are a few things to do before you follow up. First, check the job listing, as well as any emails or other contacts youâve had with the hiring manager or employer. See if any of that correspondence includes information on when you can expect to hear back from the company. If they give you a date, be sure to wait until after that date to follow up. Even before submitting the job application, you can plan a time to follow up on your cover letter. For example, you might include at the end of the cover letter that you will call the companyâs office in a week to follow up. However, if the job listing specifically says that applicants should not call or email, then do not include this in your cover letter, and do not follow up. How to Long to Wait to Follow Up It is usually best to wait a week or two before making an inquiry. If you follow up any sooner, you might come across as pushy or impatient to the employer. Regime Change in 3D Printed Microfluidics Regime Change in 3D Printed Microfluidics Regime Change in 3D Printed Microfluidics Engineers and chemists from Brigham Young University, Provo, UT, have broken through a major barrier to the wider use of 3D-printed microfluidics. With a customized printer and resin, the researchers were the first to fabricate a lab-on-a-chip with 3D-printed features small enough to fall within the true microfluidic regime below 100 micrometers. With fluidic flow channel cross sections of 18 x 20-micrometers, these devices could signal the arrival of 3D printing as a viable alternative to standard soft lithography or hot embossing for microdevice fabrication. Others have 3D-printed fluidic channels, saysGregory Nordin, professor of electricaland computer engineering at BYU.But they havent been able to make them small enough for microfluidics. So we decided to make our own 3D printer and research a resin that could do it. To those accustomed to viewing the world on the macro scale, the difference of a few micrometers may seem hair-splittingly small. But to microdevice engineers its a very big deal. By giving researchers easier, more affordable access to microdevices in the same size regime as complex commercially made devices, 3D printing could propel microfluidics to new heights in mainstream biological research and clinical diagnostics. Were deliberately trying to start a revolution in how microfluidicdevices are fabricated, Nordin says. To print channels small enough for microfluidics, researchers had to make their own 3D printer and find a resin that could do it. Image: Brigham Young University Microfluidics: Whats the Big Deal? Microfluidic devices incorporate all steps in the biological measurement process from sample pretreatment and preparation to detection onto a small chip. Microscopic channels within the devices are on the ideal scale to study miniscule biological phenomena like disease markers, cells, and sub-cellular structures in blood or other body fluids. They make it possible to extract data from extremely small sample volumes with minimal amounts of reagent. The demand for microfluidics is growing rapidly in pharmaceutical and biotechnologyresearch, where they are widely used in proteomics, high-throughput DNA sequencing, gene analysis, and enzymatic assays. Early microfluidics were fabricated from silicon and glass using clean-room techniques and facilities already in use for semiconductor manufacturing. Glass-based chips were well suited for the prevailing electrophoretic measurement methods of the time, but with drawbacks. Both glass and silicon are brittle, and silicon is opaque to UV and visible light, making it incompatible with optical microscopes. The advent in the 1990s of soft lithography using elastomeric materials like polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) dramatically advanced the field, but still requires equipment and expertise not typically available in life science labs. As an increasingly commonplace laboratory technology, 3D printing is eyed as the key to bringing microfluidics into the mainstream. Interest in 3D printing has been steadily growing among lab-on-a-chip designers working to reduce the cost and complexity of prototyping and developing miniature devices that significantly outperform their full-scale counterparts. Some of the more intriguing emerging applications of microfluidics include precision drug delivery and sophisticated screening and diagnostic measurements for point-of-care (POC) use, particularly in the global health arena. In principle, robust 3D-printed microfluidics could make these mass-market clinical tools cheaper and easier to deploy in resource-scarce settings beset by infectious diseases. As the technology matures, digital light processing stereolithography (DLP-SLA) has become a popular printing approach for lab-on-a-chip devices. DLP-SLA printers incorporate a micromirror array chip akin to those used in consumer projectors to create an optical pattern for each layer of a device during the printing process. However, Nordins team at BYU found that commercial DLP-SLA printers and materials are not capable of producing device features in the sub-100-micrometer regime the sweet spot for measuring cellular and sub-cellular structures and processes. The minimum channel size attainable with conventional DLP-SLA printers appears to be in the 100-500 micrometer regime, although sizes in the millimeter and sub-millimeter range are more common, Nordin says. For 3D printing to offer a practical alternative to conventional fabrication techniques, sub-100-micrometer fabrication capabilities will be essential. Equipment and Materials The BYU system comprises a high-resolution light engine from Visitec, Lier, Norway; a 45-degree turning mirror with three axes of adjustment; a heavily modified DLP-SLA 3D printing mechanism from Solus, Junction 3D, Santa Clarita, CA; and custom-made mounts. The custom light engine and light source combination was critical to achieving the small in-plane (x-y) void size they sought while enabling them to work with a wider selection of materials for custom resin formulations. Having achieved unsatisfactory results using a 405-nm light emitting diode (LED) source, they instead used a 385-nm LED which dramatically expanded their options. To formulate the ideal resin material for printing microfluidic void sizes, the team first developed a mathematical model for calculating the optical penetration depth and critical exposure time of a particular resin based on factors such as measured molar absorptivity and desired absorber concentrations. For the resin itself, they chose to start with a base of poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) monomer, which has low non-specific adsorption, is suitable for electrophoretic separations, is biocompatible, and can tolerate common solvents such as acetone and toluene.
